About the Show

From its abstract roots in Cubism to the political and counter culture movements of Dada and Punk, collage has always been a product of its environment. With the rise of 24 hour media cycles, social networks and search engines, contemporary culture has effectively rendered print media obsolete, creating a virtual boom in discarded paper ephemera for collage artists to examine and reinvent. Through these discarded remnants collage artists have become the archivists and activists of this post modern age, paralleling the frenetic pace in which we live while exposing the voyeuristic and often disjointed nature of popular culture.

From this cultural and historical foundation All That Remains will act primarily as a bridge between the past, present and future, while surveying contemporary collage through a select group of 25 artists exploring a variety of techniques and formats. Each artist however will be asked to submit work based loosely on the following metaphors: memory, obsession, connections, disenchantment and revelations.

These curated themes will provide the necessary conceptual framework while presenting a deeper examining of both collage, its conceptual heritage and the analogous sensations created by modern expectations.

In keeping with the situational history of photomontage, the site-specific curatorial project Ugly Art Room is exhibiting All That Remains at Picture Farm, a working photography studio. The ever-fluctuating history of collage finds itself on the walls of a room that also redefines itself for changing needs. Both the gallery and art within have the capacity to re-imagine situations ranging from commercial use to radical experimentation. The works selected spotlight the currency of this reshaping discipline, with a reshaping history, in a reshaping space.

Ugly Art Room, a roving curatorial art project based in Brooklyn, New York seeks unusual and unique spaces to curate art exhibits in order to challenge the "white box" gallery tradition and present work in consideration of its relationship to its environment physically, conceptually and historically. This adds a challenge to the curatorial process where context is brought to the forefront and a story develops between the artwork and the space. Ultimately, a unique and inspiring viewing experience results.

Ugly Art Room, a 4 person team consisting of Jennifer Galatioto, Julie Feldman, Scott Chasse and Martin Esteves has produced 10 successful art shows since its October 2010 inception.

Cutters Edges Contemporary Collage A Group Exhibition Curated by James Gallagher

Collage is currently experiencing a new heyday in contemporary art and visual culture. Today’s artists, illustrators, and designers are increasingly drawn to this artistic technique by the challenges of seamlessly melding traditional craftsmanship with skilled computer montage. They are not only composing a wide variety of visual elements, but are also deliberately omitting, deleting, and destroying them.
Though it first gained popularity in the early twentieth century, collage is a true reflection of the world we live in today, and the innovative work now being produced represents a new era for this technique. According to curator James Gallagher, the works in the exhibition “fall into a variety of categories, numerous styles, and countless visions. All of them made from the act of physically or digitally cutting and pasting…resulting in a range of work that encompasses everything from social and political commentaries to personal confessions, not to mention surrealist fantasies composed from real life and from the imaginary.”

Highlights among the selected artists include Sergej Sviatchenko and April Gertler. Ukrainian-born, Danish-based architect and artist Sviatchenko has had numerous solo and group exhibitions across Europe, Canada, and the USA and is one of the leading figures in contemporary collage. Gertler, an American artist based in Berlin, is the founder of Picture Berlin, an artist residence/art academy for artists working with photography.

The exhibition also has contributions from Hisham Akira Bharoocha, a visual artist and musician, who is known for his legendary status as founding member of Lightning Bolt and Black Dice, now working on his solo project Soft Circle.

Paul Burgess, who has worked with Sex Pistols on a number of occasions as a photographer and designer and is also co-author of the book Satellite: Sex Pistols published by Abstract Sounds in 1999; Katherine Streeter, an award winning New York-based illustrator who has had her work published in newspapers including the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times and the Guardian; and Irish-based artist Stephen Brandes, who represented Ireland at the 2005 Venice Biennale.

James Gallagher, who already curated the CUTTERS series of exhibitions showcasing contemporary collage in Brooklyn in 2009, in Berlin in 2010 and in Cork in 2011, uses collage to investigate human form and personal identity. His art has been shown in galleries around the world and featured in numerous magazines and books.

Gallagher is also co-editor of the recently released Gestalten book Cutting Edges: Contemporary Collage, an inspiring collection of unique recent work created using this technique.

Paul Burgess will be exhibiting as part of the third 'Cutters' show.

This exhibition will focus on contemporary collage and will showcase a large
number of works by an international collection of artists.

In Cutters/Cork James Gallagher, a collage artist himself, has brought together over 50 artists from all over the world to illustrate the range and depth of collage taking place today. This exhibition is the third in the Cutters series (Brooklyn in 2009, and Berlin in 2010), and will continue to showcase the excitement of the newly invigorated art form of collage.

‘Nature is the Church of Satan’ at the 2010 Whitstable Biennale

Paul Burgess will be showing a new film ‘Twins’ as part of the screening of ‘Nature is the Church of Satan’ at the 2010 Whitstable Biennale Satellite Programme this Saturday 3^rd July 2010 at 8pm. Please come along if you can.

Curated by Louise Colbourne, this collection of short films and videos offer a dark, surreal view of nature and the landscape. The title comes from a line in Lars Von Trier’s film Antichrist (2009), which explores a psychologically disturbing relationship between the main female character and the woods surrounding her house.

Including Work by: Zoe Brown, Jenny Baines, Louise Colbourne, Dryden Goodwin, Jim Hobbs, Paul Burgess, Michael James Jones, Matt Hulse, Kate Street and Vicky Thornton.

Chaumont  International Poster and Graphic Arts Festival 2010

Paul Burgess will be one of 30 illustrators and artists selected by Adrian Shaughnessy to be shown at this year's Chaumont  International Poster and Graphic Arts Festival in France, running from 29 May – 20 June 2010. The exhibition will be called "En Tube". Each poster will be printed and displayed publicly on giant concrete tubes  that are spread around the town.

ILLUSTRATIVE 09 / BERLIN

Paul Burgess will be a guest speaker at ‘Illustrative 09’ in Berlin this coming weekend. Illustrative is the leading international forum for contemporary illustration and graphic arts. ‘Illustrative 09’ runs from October 15th to November 1st. Established in Berlin in 2006, Illustrative has been held twice in Berlin (2006/2007), once in Paris (2007), and once in Zürich (2008).

Paul will giving a talk as part of a one-day conference on Friday, 16 October 2009, between 15.50 - 16.30.
The conference is open to all visitors of Illustrative (no extra-charge).

BACK FROM THE LATITUDE FESTIVAL

Just back from the Latitude Festival where I had a great time. Hats off to everyone at Lavish who looked after us over the four days. I exhibited new paintings in the woods, painted sheep and watched great sets from !!!, Fever Ray, Nick Cave, Wildbirds and Peacedrums, just to name a few. A big thanks to 'The Sonic manipulator' www.sonicmanipulator.com who was the star of the festival, playing each night in my space in the forest, what a intergalactic hero! Thanks also to James Rueben who collaborated on some paintings with me, and guided my through the latitude mayhem! Here's to next year.
